What is a Black Panther?
Some people use the term black panther loosely for any type of big cat with a black coat, such as the cougar, puma, tiger, bobcat, lynx, jaguarundi, or even a suspected prehistoric survivor - the cave lion.
Zoologically speaking, the term panther is synonymous with leopard. The name leopard comes from Greek words for lion (leo) and panther (pardos). Panther and leopard are names for the same kind of animal, but panther is most often used for the black phase of the spotted leopard. The term black panther, therefore, refers only to the black leopard - a melanistic variant of spotted leopards. Some people (especially in Central and South America) also use the term black panther to refer to a black jaguar - the closest relative to the leopard.
Where Do Black Panthers Live?
Black panthers live chiefly in the hot, dense tropical rainforests of south and southeast Asia. They are mainly in southwestern China, Burma, Nepal, southern India, Indonesia, and the southern part of Malaysia. In Java, Indonesia and southern Malaysia, black leopards are more common than light-colored leopards. These animals have also been reported in the dry and rocky areas of Ethiopia, the forests of Mount Kenya, and the Aberdares in Africa; however, their population in these areas is sparse.
What Do Black Panthers Eat?
What do black panthers eat? Black panthers are carnivores, or meat eaters. Black panthers eat just about anything that moves as long as they are capable of catching them and their stomachs can handle. Medium-sized mammals make up their main diet in the wild. Occasionally, they supplement this meaty diet with grass, eggs, and fruit.
Black panthers are able to adapt well to new environments or various circumstances. When necessary, they replace one kind of prey with another. In the case of a shortage of wild animals, they may catch livestock or pets near their home range.
Are Black Panthers Endangered?
Although black panthers can adapt well to different habitats, they are endangered. Human beings are the biggest threat to their survival.
Farmers kill black panthers with poison and traps to protect livestock and people. Hunters kill them for adventure and for their beautiful and precious furs. Human beings are moving into areas which have traditionally been natural habitats and communities for wildlife animals. The loss and deterioration of natural habitats for black panthers constitute a major threat to their survival.
